This website is a resource for those who are anxious to see the defeat of the Howard Coalition Government at the forthcoming federal election. We are particularly interested to involve ALP, Greens and Democrat candidates in marginal seats.

On this website you will find articles and websites on the risks posed to Australia by the Howard Government. Make use of them.

A feature of the revamped website is the attention given to climate change. The rationale for this emphasis is that without action on climate change we will not have an economy to worry about.

If you have any information that you believe would be of interest to users of this website, please post them to us.

"We used to have "promises" from politicians. Then we had "core" and "non core" promises. Now with the carbon tax promises we have "bunyip" promises - you can't see it, you can't hear it, you don't know what it is, but you think it's there."
- Diana Rocke, Letters to the Age, June 2007

In 2004 a group of people ashamed of John Howard's Government record on Tampa, the SIEV X, and the Iraq invasion set up a website now named www.australiaatrisk.com with the aim of assisting the campaign to defeat the Howard Government.

Unfortunately we failed in 2001 to convince Australian voters that Howard's unscrupulous policies of turning back unseaworthy boats and mandatorily detaining, indefinitely, hundreds of asylum seekers, who had committed no crime, was unacceptable in a civilized society.

Nor could we get voters to recognize that the Howard policy of temporary protection visas for people who had been granted refugee status was a key factor in driving desperate family members of TPV holders to risk their lives in leaky boats. The drowning of 353 asylum seekers on the SIEV X can be directly attributed to this policy.

Even the lies told by the Howard Government to get Australia involved in what turned out to be the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq failed to convince the majority of the electorate, until 2007 that a change of government was needed.

After the victory by the Liberals in 2004, including them winning control of the Senate, the Howard Government got even bolder. They used their Senate majority to pass the WorkChoices legislation, which has hurt many Australians.

In 2007, the Australian people have had enough of the Howard government and have voted them out with a resounding victory to Labor, supported in a preference deal by the Greens. We congratulate Kevin Rudd, the Labor leadership and the ACTU for their successful campaign.

We congratulate and thank Bob Brown and the Greens for their preferences which helped Labor get across the line in many marginal seats.

K07 And We're Off!!
The countdown has begun. Mr Howard has finally announced the date for the election as the 24th November - But you and your friends could be stopped from voting.
Really?
If you're not correctly enrolled you only have until 8pm on Wednesday 17th October to fill in and return your form to the Australian Electoral Commission. Click here to get your form
That's a bit weird!
That's because the Howard Government passed a law closing the roll early this election. And according to their recent figures, one in three Australians between the ages of 18 to 25 are not enrolled to vote. So even if you're enrolled correctly, chances are at least one of your friends isn't and may not even know it.
Check your enrolment
Click here and spread the word to your friends and family now. Many people move address and don't think to update their details with the AEC. Others have been overseas, or simply haven't thought to enrol since they turned 18. It's possible to be missing from the roll and not even realise until you turn up on Election Day, only to be turned away.
Why it matters
Whether or not you vote, you and your friends will be profoundly affected by the outcome of this election, and the decisions the next government makes. WorkChoices, funding to universities, TAFEs, youth allowance and Austudy. The environment.
In a democracy like ours, governments are meant to be answerable to you for their actions. But if you don't vote, why would they listen? And you can only vote if you're correctly enrolled to vote by Wednesday 17th October.
Spread the word
To everyone you know: it's now or another three years before you'll have the chance to have your say, and no amount of wishful thinking or complaining has the power of a ballot. It only takes a minute to click here, check your details and enrol today, before it's too late.
